How to Prepare for Your Amateur Radio Exam
Getting ready to sit for an amateur radio license exam? Here are a few tips from our Volunteer Examiner team to help you walk in prepared and confident.
Study the current question pool
Every exam question comes from a published question pool, so there are no surprises. Free practice exam sites let you take unlimited practice tests using the real question pool, which is the fastest way to see where you stand.
Know what to bring
- A valid, government-issued photo ID
- Your FCC Registration Number (FRN), or apply for one for free ahead of time at fcc.gov/coresupport
- The current exam fee (see our calendar page for session details)
- Your current license, if you're upgrading or renewing
Arrive early and relax
Sessions can take some time depending on how many candidates are testing. Arriving a few minutes early gives you time to fill out paperwork before the exam starts. Our VE team is there to help the process go smoothly — don't hesitate to ask questions before you begin.
